Victoria 32.
My husband and I were married in June 2000 and were looking forward to starting a family together, ( I have a 13 year old daughter from my previous marriage). However towards the end of the year, after having years of irregular periods I realised that my periods had completely stopped and that I was not going to conceive. I went to see my GP who asked lots of questions about my physical state and nothing else, he then carried out a blood test and told me to return in 10 days.
Returning after 10 days my GP told that I was pre-menopausal and should undergo hormone replacement therapy or HRT immediately and continue taking HRT until I was in my fifties and that it was unlikely that I would have any more children. If I did not take the HRT I would be at high risk from osteoporosis and other related illnesses.
There were no words that could describe how I felt, well maybe; it was as if he had punched me in the stomach. I came home and told my husband the sad news. We looked at each other in disbelief. I was too young to be going through all this and we really wanted to start a family. In the meantime I began taking the HRT Ð Prempak C from November 2000 to April 2001 at which point I had had enough of the mood swings, the bouts of depression and the appalling periods I was suffering (two days in bed basically). It was affecting my attitude to work. I was no longer myself so I quit my job. I desperately needed some help from someone.
A friend suggested I try an alternative therapist or at least an alternative to HRT. She pointed me in the direction of Dr.Deepika Rodrigo at the Kailash Centre of Oriental Medicine in St Johns Wood. My husband and I were a little skeptical but decided to give it a try as we had nothing to lose.
We went to see Dr.Deepika believing that there was not a lot she could do for me. During the consultation she started to explain to me that my body or my particular constitution was out of balance with my natural state. We then sat and listened whole heartedly for an hour and half to her explanation of my current state. She advised changes to my diet and lifestyle along with a prescription of Ayurvedic medicines to take.
I started the Ayurvedic treatment in April 2001 alongside the HRT at first then gradually stopped the HRT completely towards the end of April and continued solely with the Ayurvedic medicine. After just one month I had a period and the changes to my diet and lifestyle had a dramatic effect on my life, I feeling much better about myself, and my outlook on life had improved.
I have had regular period now for nearly a year, I have stopped smoking and my new diet plan is working wonders. I am losing the weight I had gained whilst taking the HRT and no longer have the hot flushes or terrible bouts of depression. My husband and I can look forward to starting a family together thanks to Dr.Deepika.
