Clients sucessfully treated at The Ayurvedic Clinic
Over the last two decades Dr Deepika Rodrigo has been able to help hundreds of couples to realise their dream of having a baby with approximately three quarters of her patients conceiving naturally. In addition she has helped many couples to optimise their chances of success with Assisted Fertility Treatments such IVF.
The Ayurvedic Fertility Treatment Programme is designed to assist with female fertility by improving the quality of the egg, the environment of the female reproductive system to encourage fertilisation and implantation, as well support the foetus in its growth. This programme also assists male fertility by improving the quality and motility of the sperm.
Wherever you are in your fertility journey and whatever the challenges you face, Ayurveda can optimise your chances of conceiving, whether naturally or when used to support a method of Assisted Fertility Treatment.
Ayurveda regards each individual as unique and so recognises the need for a customised approach to balance and true well-being. We are each a combination of three doshas, Vata, Pitta and Kapha, with one or two being the predominant one. It the specific make up of our constitution or Prakriti, taken together with many other factors such as genetic background, geography, diet, lifestyle, relationships, work which determines our unique nature. Our specific constitutional make-up is as unique to us as our DNA code. Imbalances in our constitution or Prakiti cause disorders.
Procreation is a part of nature. Every single living being can contribute by procreating to sustain the universe and life on the planet. Ayurveda stands out as a treatment method for infertility as it tries to find the most natural balance for the body to do the most important thing in life that is, creating life.
If you want to grow a good crop or to produce a prize vegetable, firstly we need to look at the place where the crop is to be grown. Is the earth in good condition? Does in need to be cultivated and conditioned with fertilizer? What is the climate like? Is there enough water and sunlight?
When seeking to create life, to conceive a child, we tend to forget about the condition of our bodies (and we are talking from both the male and female perspectives here) The question to ask is are we fertile enough and in good enough health to create life? What is your diet like? Are you drinking and smoking too much? Are you eating incorrect foods for your particular body type (dosha)? Do you get enough exercise?
This is where the science of Ayurveda comes in. It can correct the imbalances caused by incorrect diet and lifestyle and give you the optimum health to help you conceive.
With a detailed consultation we can aim for the optimum health for the female and health of her womb and reproductive organs and optimum health for the male and of course the most important ingredient, the quality of the sperm.
In spiritual terms you are inviting a soul onto the earth plane and we need to give that soul and body every chance of good health in body and mind. As with the land, we can create the beautiful flowers, the good crops and prize fruits, with Ayurveda we can help with the task of creating beautiful healthy children.
How can Ayurveda help with your fertility?
In Ayurveda there are four main elements we consider for fertility.
In female the maturity of eggs, low egg reserves and poor quality eggs can affect the fertility and some disorders like PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) and chocolate cysts also contribute to lack of fertility.
Fertility also depends on the age of the person and how they have look after their body and mind in the past. High alcohol consumption, smoking, fast food, excessive intake of contraceptives and emotional and physical stress, these facts directly contribute to your fertility and general health.
It can imbalance your natural doshic equilibrium. Mostly in Ayurveda Vata dosha or (circulating energy) can effect the above factors. Vata dosha and mostly apana vata (downward circulating energy) is responsible for ovulation, micturation, bowel movements and menstruation and orgasm. When apana vata is disturbed, not only does it effect to your ovulation it can cause menstrual problems, thrush, UTI, dryness of vagina, low libido, constipation or loose motions.
By correcting the movement of apana vata with Ayurvedic herbs, dietary advice and using the panchakarma purification methods used in Ayurveda we can condition the body and ovaries to create the optimum healthy eggs to fertilise.
The literal Sanskrit meaning of Ammbu is water and also refers to the hormone level of the body. Ayurveda recognises that hormonal balance in the female and male plays a vital role in pregnancy. The female hormones estrogen and progesterone have to be in perfect balance to create a good menstrual cycle.
A regular menstrual cycle is really important to anybody who wishes to get pregnant. In the first half of your menstrual cycle or the first 14 days it is considered to the estrogens dominant period. This period of the menstrual cycle is considered to be the “Durga Period”. The goddess Durga is responsible for creation. In this particular time women must be made to feel like a goddess to give the best possible chance to fertilize the maturing eggs. You can see the calm, loving, caring, happy, more feminine and sexual nature of the female in this period.
When the estrogen hormone levels are imbalanced in this time you would feel the opposite to the above signs, such as feeling a lack of energy, slightly depressed, vaginal dryness, craving for sweets, and general unhappiness.
The second half of the menstrual cycle governing hormone is considered to be progesterone. This hormone is responsible for a positive destructive element and the Indian goddess Kali rules this period. This positive destructive element is responsible for clearing out all the negative physical and emotional imbalances and creating a perfect womb to implant the already fertilized egg.
The first week of the second half of the menstrual cycle women should feel normal and happy. In the last week of the menstrual cycle the body should tell you if you the implantation has been a success or not. The failure of implantation gives bodily signs like agitation, anger, hot flushes, and intolerance to little things, craving for sweets, perspiration and tender breasts. These symptoms are due to a “weeping womb” i.e. failure to implant the egg leading to menstruation.
If progesterone hormone is imbalanced in the body the above symptoms can appear as uncontrollable and give discomfort to the person. In Ayurveda, we can recognize the hormone imbalances by closely considering these events in the body and correct them by giving Ayurvedic herbal medicine. There are other hormones like FSH, LH, TSH, that also affect the fertility levels in the body. We can detect imbalances in these hormones and act accordingly by prescribing Ayurvedic medicines.
When you want to store your best jewellery you would probably want to find a very good container for them so as not to scratch or damage your valuables. Ayurvedic fundamentals are the same. When you prepare to conceive a baby, the most priceless gift of your life, Ayurveda explains how to condition the womb with the perfect temperature with the warmth and comfort to carry your baby throughout the pregnancy and most importantly the first three months.
In Ayurveda this depends on the heating and cooling quality of the whole body. Ideally three months before your pregnancy you should consider having dietary advice to keep a neutral balance for the body and you should try and stay relaxed doing some mental excesses like meditation, yoga and prepare for giving unconditional love for your unborn.
In my experience most western women have problems in this area. I found most women have excessive heat in pelvic cavity and this can cause a disturbance to the developing foetus. This excessive heat in the pelvic area can cause the fertilised egg not to implant or cause a malfunction of the foetus in the early stages of pregnancy. It can also lead to miscarriages.
When having IVF treatment you can fertilise the eggs to the blastatis stage but still have to insert to the womb to continue the pregnancy. Though hormones can be provided from the outside for the next stage of pregnancy the pitta dosha can only be controlled by adjusting you diet and lifestyle accordingly using the science of Ayurveda. Ayurveda has excellent treatment for the pitta dosha to stay in it perfect balance.
Often I meet couples who are hoping to conceive in their mid forties. I certainly don’t ask why they have not tried before because as they have come to see me this is obviously the right time for them to meet, so they can invite another soul into the world. Sometimes couples can be in their mid twenties and have perfect health and lots of love and wealth but they might not get pregnant with conventional means and it is described as unexplained infertility. In Ayurveda this situation it is described in terms of kala or time.
Time runs parallel with karma. Ayurveda helps explain karma (action) and kala (time) and makes you aware that there is a right time for some things and sometimes because of karmic influence they might not come to be at all. So because of karmic influences some couples may never have children but that doesn’t mean all is lost.
Ayurveda can prepare you for having a baby but if that’s not possible you can give all that unconditional love to the world instead….. Just like Mother Theresa!!! We help women to understand their life purpose and live well whatever the outcome.
Your bespoke treatment programme consists of:
When to start the treatment?
The short answer is as soon as possible. Ayurveda has been used for thousands of years to promote and support pregnancy. Just as in gardening, it is essential to prepare the ground to grow healthy seeds. This means that the both the female and male bodies must be balanced, which means well nourished and unobstructed by toxins. We recommend that you consult us at least 3 to 4 months prior to starting any Assisted Fertility Treatment.
The initial consultation
We encourage couples to attend the initial consultation together if possible (90 minutes for couples and 60 minutes for single patient). During this consultation be prepared to discuss your medical history, any gynaecological investigations or fertility treatments you may have had as well as your general health. It is helpful to bring with you the results of any investigations or treatments you have had. For a more detailed explanation of what to expect in an Ayurvedic consultation and how the doctor decides on treatment, please see “What to expect” under the “Consultations” tab.
We recommend that patients have blood tests to monitor FSH and LH levels in the blood for women. The FSH level should be taken on the second day of your period and the LH test on day 22 of your cycle. We can recommend associate clinics for these tests. In general, in Ayurveda, a Physician is able to identify and treat imbalances in the system without the use of multiple tests beyond the basic FSH and LH blood tests. You will be advised whether you need to have any other tests such as Prolactin, Oestradiol, Antimullerian hormone, Inhibin B and progesterone, pelvic ultrasound scans, fallopian tubal patency test or semen analysis for men.
Follow up consultation and therapies
Your first follow up consultation will be either a fortnight or a month after the initial consultation and thereafter once a month.
The Panchakarma therapy for fertility takes 3 to 5 days. The treatment is 3 hours per day on each consecutive day and is carried out at the clinic. Your Panchakarma therapy for fertility will be scheduled at the most optimum time during your cycle.
Every cycle presents an opportunity to conceive and the therapy treatments will be scheduled to optimise your chances of conception. You will not need to have this therapy every month. On average, patients go through 2 to 3 cycles of Panchakarma therapy for fertility.
The length and course of treatment depends on many factors. 35% of our patients conceived within 6 months; 49% conceived within one year and 15% took up to two years.
Whilst many of our patients have conceived within 3 months and even within weeks using the diet and herbal medicine alone, we recommend that you plan for at least 6 months of treatment.
Ayurvedic Assisted Fertility Treatment (AST) support Programme
For women who want to use Assisted Fertility Treatments such as IVF, this programme is designed to optimise their chances of success. It is recommended that patients begin the Ayurvedic support programme at least 3 months prior to egg collection.
Ante Natal Care with Ayurveda
We routinely care for our patients during pregnancy to avoid the risk of miscarriage and reduce morning sickness and nausea. You will be able to consult with the doctor to advise on your after care programme, dietary and lifestyle guidance, how to look after yourself and the baby. We can also advise on how best to deal with common pregnancy related issues such as morning sickness so that you can enjoy a smooth and happy pregnancy. We recommend an appointment at the end of each semester to review your progress.
We recommend pregnancy treatment therapy within the first semester, which is carried out near to full moon days every month for 3 months. This is a two-day treatment (two hours each consecutive day at the clinic). In certain cases it may be appropriate to have pregnancy treatment in the third semester also.
AYURVEDIC FERTILITY TREATMENT PROGRAMME EXPLAINED
Why is this treatment effective?
The Ayurvedic Fertility Treatment Programme was specially devised by Dr. Deepika Rodrigo. After two decades of clinical experience in treating women with fertility issues and with extensive Ayurvedic expertise and having experienced issues with fertility herself, she used her understanding about the causes and most effective methods of treatment to design a programme to enhance fertility.
This treatment is also the product of her extensive experience of fertility issues in Western culture, which are influenced by particular lifestyle issues, climate, environment and psycho-physiological factors. This course of treatment enables those seeking treatment for fertility issues to achieve the optimum level of balance and health to help them conceive. It is effective for women seeking to conceive naturally or for those seeking to conceive using IVF. It is also effective in treating men where there is a fertility disturbance.
The main aims of the treatment
The treatment firstly aims to achieve a relaxed state of body and mind, as this is the first important factor in aiding the process of conception. The body is thus ready to accept the process of creating a new life.
The second line of treatment aims to correct what in Ayurveda is known as “Apana Vata”. Apana Vata according to the ancient medical system of Ayurveda is part of the Vata dosha and is responsible for the process of ovulation, micturation, elimination, orgasm and implantation. When the body and mind is relaxed, energy is redirected from the mind into the body and then downward as Apana Vata.
When there is insufficient or low Apana Vata in the pelvic area the process of conception can be disturbed. The effect of low Apana Vata occurs in the area of the womb/ovaries and can result in an immature egg being produced or the production of too many eggs of poor quality (PCOS or Poly Cystic Ovary Syndrome). Even if an egg or eggs are successful in becoming fertilized it or they are unlikely to survive full term where the Apana Vata is disturbed. The result can be miscarriage of the foetus or non-fertilisation of the eggs.
When this imbalance in the Apana Vata occurs, the body normally reacts by instigating a rescue mission by increasing the Pitta Dosha or metabolic heat in the pelvic area to compensate. When Pitta occupies this place, its inherent fire or heat also radiates into the pelvis causing an excess of heat. This excess heat creates an inhospitable environment for the survival of either sperm or eggs. Even if an egg is fertilised and before implantation, the excessive heat in the pelvic area will attack and destroy the fertilised egg in a process similar to an autoimmune disorder where the body attacks its own cells resulting in a miscarriage (RECENTLY IDENTIFED AS NATURAL KILLER CELLS CYNDORME. Sometimes, even an implanted egg can be disturbed by excess heat leading to miscarriage.
How will the Ayurvedic Fertility Treatment Programme assist?
From time to time our bodies react to changes in our diet and lifestyle. For example, these changes can come from overwork that creates too much stress or travelling which means we are not able to eat the things we are accustomed to eating.
Factors such as these can result in an imbalance to our bodies and an excessive increase or decrease in the three doshas of Vata, Pitta and Kapha. These factors dictate our general well-being and when it comes to fertility and conception, are of critical importance. As a simple illustration of what imbalances in the three doshas can create in the state of mind and body:
As a mother, the patient needs to focus on her health to create the best possible conditions for the fertilisation of the egg and growth of the foetus. When a baby is conceived he/she has to occupy the womb for nine months. Mothers need to focus on the health and comfort of their own body throughout the whole term to support its work in carrying the baby. That must be the absolute priority above other seemingly important considerations (such as what colour to paint the nursery!)
THE PANCHAKARMA TREATMENT THERAPY
The first stage of the process is the detoxification of the body. This is achieved by a 3-5 day Panchakarma de-toxification treatment that has been specifically tailored for those seeking to enhance their fertility. This treatment can be scheduled at any time of the patient’s cycle. Some patients achieve their expectations even at this early stage of treatment.
The next stage involves a 3-day egg enhancing treatment for 2-6 cycles. The number of cycles required depends on the body’s response, the level of imbalance and the patient’s state of mind. However each cycle optimises the level of fertility, which the patient is capable of recognising through the signs and symptoms of her own body (for example, increase of cervical mucous, changes in body temperature and increase in sexual desire during ovulation). This means that it is possible for patients to achieve their expectations in any cycle.
The treatment also involves regular fortnightly or monthly consultation with the Doctor to monitor the body’s response to treatment and administer herbal medicines. In this way the Doctor is able to identify the best cycle in which to conceive and so accordingly recommend the Panchakarma treatment in that cycle. The treatment is generally recommended around days 5 to 11 of the cycle depending on the ovulation day.
In some cases, patients experience miscarriage and problems with implantation. To aid implantation and prevent miscarriage Panchakarma treatment can be done on day 21 of the cycle to reduce the heat in the body and specifically in the pelvic area.
What happens during the treatment?
This is a Panchakarma treatment specially adapted to enhance fertility. On each consecutive day the treatment lasts 3 hours.
Stage 1. Abhyanga – oil application and massage head to toe, this procedure helps the body to relax and relieve stress and release emotional blockages.
Stage 2. Pinda sweda – hot herbal medicated pouches (prepared for each patient according to their needs) are used to foment (hot fomentation to open pores) to detox the skin and relax the muscular tissue.
Stage 3. Shirodhara – the gentle pouring of a stream of warm oil on the forehead to relieve negative emotions and calm the mind and body by pacifying the central nervous system.
Stage 4. Vasti – medicated oil enema or decoction to correct apana vata.
Stage 5. Special Fertility treatments – these extra treatments will be recommended by the doctor on a case-by-case basis on the basis of the doctors diagnosis and the patients condition. They may include one or more of the following:
HOW TO PREPARE FOR TREATMENT THERAPY
The following recommendations are the best way to prepare your mind and body to fully receive the benefits of the treatment. Prioritising the treatment is the best way to ensure you can follow as many of the recommendations as possible. Try to follow the recommendations as far as possible, but don’t worry if circumstances don’t allow for all of them. The greatest support of all for your body is a relaxed state of mind.
